BHS is entering a period of new leadership with the hiring of Rebekah Sharpe as our next principal.
The decision follows a selection process that included community engagement, a candidate forum, and an opportunity for student input. We believe the process reflects the district’s commitment to transparency and community involvement, and we are cautiously optimistic and hopeful for the school’s future.
Based on reporting from the candidate forum, we believe Sharpe brings clear strengths to the role. Her background in middle school and high school as well as her experience as a teacher and administrator suggest that she has a broad understanding of school leadership.
Her responses to our questions assured us that she will listen to student opinion and concern. She also emphasizes relationships, student voice and school spirit, responding to a common concern among students. A focus on communication and connection is crucial in a high school setting, where student experience is shaped equally by academics and the school environment.
At the same time, the transition raises valid concerns about the continuation of our current leadership. Beachwood already has deeply embedded and respected administrators who understand the nuances of our school and our student body.
In a view shared by both students and staff, choosing an external candidate over a more familiar and established presence leads to questions about whether knowledge of the community was undervalued in the decision-making process.
Looking forward, Sharpe’s stated priorities are a mixed bag. Her commitment to improving communication about student activities addresses a real issue we see every day, and strengthening communication surrounding school resources like academic programs and extracurriculars would mean improving our students’ abilities to achieve success.
On the other hand, Sharpe’s perspective on emerging issues, such as the role of artificial intelligence, will require further explanation. As AI increasingly integrates itself into education, both students and teachers are navigating uncertainty over what role it should play in education.
As the use of AI technology is spreading faster than anyone’s ability to regulate it, what does responsible AI usage in schools really mean?
In this new chapter of BHS leadership, it’s important to establish trust within the Beachwood community and with the student body. While the hiring process included community perspectives, this kind of engagement must continue beyond a single event. We hope to see a brighter spotlight on academic achievements, and we are interested in knowing her stance on prior review of student publications.
Ultimately, it is too early to determine what Sharpe’s leadership will look like. It is clear to the editors of the Beachcomber, however, that she is stepping into a school with high expectations, strong traditions and a caring community.
For now, the focus should be on ensuring a smooth transition to a new chapter of leadership. A new principal can bring possibilities for growth, and we are looking forward to seeing what Ms. Sharpe will bring to the table.
