Yesterday was primary election day in Ohio, and in Beachwood there were two main polling stations: the Beachwood Community Center and Beachwood High School.
This being an off-year election, many of the races have not gotten as much attention, and some candidates are running unopposed.
State Representative Eric Synenberg (District #21, which includes Beachwood), is one who ran unopposed on the primary ballot, but will face write-in Republican candidate Tina Barhams in the November election.
Despite being unopposed in the primary, Synenberg was out in front of BHS yesterday campaigning.
Representative Synenberg’s son, BHS junior Ari Synenberg, is proud of his dad’s public service.
“I am grateful that my dad is running for reelection, and I am happy that he will continue to serve the people of the 21st district,” he said.
Yesterday was also Ari Synenberg’s first time voting, as he will turn 18 before election day in November.
“It was super exciting to vote, it made me feel like I have a say in this government,” he said.
Many BHS seniors are already 18 and were able to vote for the first time yesterday, including senior Ellen Hawkins.
“I was excited,” she said. “It was important to me to exercise my right to vote and for my voice to be heard.”
But not all who were eligible to vote chose to do so.
“I was just too lazy to fill out the voter registration form,” senior Henry Strean said.
Sophomore Ari Kiwi, who didn’t vote because he’s not 18 yet, said if he was old enough, he would have voted.
“I want to help our country become a better place, and help America as a nation overall,” Kiwi said.
