The Bison girls soccer team started the season undefeated in their first six games, but dropped their first match to Fairview on home turf Thursday, Sept. 4.
According to Head Coach Maranda Melton the team is focused on a conference championship.
“As a team we collectively said we wanted to win the CVC, so winning our conference was a goal we set as a team this year,” she said.
Senior Captain Alissa Monahan is on board with this goal.
“I’m looking forward to hopefully winning the CVC,” she said.
The Bison have been hard at work, training daily to achieve their goal.
The girls currently have a record of 5-1-1 resulting in a winning percentage of 0.786, 1-1 in conference play.
Looking ahead on the schedule, the girls play Painsville Harvey, Brooklyn, Trinity and Lutheran West to round out the month of September.
According to Monahan, a few players to watch this season are senior captain Lilah Droe, freshman Victoria Price and sophomore Allison Stephens in the midfield, Sophomore Mia Brecher on defense and sophomore Zoe Walters as striker.
Melton enjoys seeing how the team has grown since she started coaching the Bison seven years ago.
“When I came to Beachwood I got some girls who [didn’t] play soccer year round and only played for the fall season,” she said.
It is not a surprise that for a team to be successful they need to put in the work, and that is exactly what the girls soccer team has been doing so far this season.
While the girls admit it won’t be easy, they are hoping to do big things this year, and they are looking forward to the challenge and the rest of the upcoming season.
Seven games in, the girls soccer team is in a good position to make a run.
Despite a 4-1 loss to Fairview Park the team is still in good contention for their goal of a CVC Metro Championship.
“We are definitely a great team overall,” Monahan said.
According to Maxpreps, the team leaders in stats are Zoe Walters with 8 goals, averaging 1.3 per game; Lilah Droe leads in assists with 7, averaging 1.2 per game. Morgan Jackson leads as goalie with 3 shutouts, 8 saves and an average of 1.3 saves per game.
The team plays on home turf tonight at 7:00 p.m. against the Harvey Red Raiders.
