Coming off a challenging 6-17 record last year, the boys basketball team is eager to improve with the leadership of their new coach Pete Priola.
Well before the Dec. 7 season opener against Geneva, Junior captain Jayden Koonce already feels a great connection with Priola.
“It feels like he’s been someone I’ve known for years,” he said. “He has something to prove this year also with a great system all around.”
Coach Priola brings a lot of experience .
“I was a head coach at Bedford for the past 11 years,” Priola said. “[Trainer Helen Hayes] was my old trainer at Bedford and she encouraged me to come coach for Beachwood.”
The Bison are very confident for the upcoming season. Their practices are now more structured, with a focus on conditioning, drills and skill development.
“A typical day of practice starts with shooting drills, then I lead the stretches, followed by intense running and drills,” Koonce said.
The Bison will adjust to a new coach and system, which will take time.
“Coming from Bedford, it’s a different change of scenery,” Priola said. “We’re starting from scratch with a new offense and defense, and practice is about learning and teaching.”
Fortunately, Priola has quickly established a strong bond with his players.
“From day one, the coaches and I have built a strong, transparent relationship,” Reese said
This season, the Bison are adapting to the loss of three key seniors, including Daniel Rub, who was an important part of the Bison’s starting five.
Koonce and Reese plan to step up and assume more responsibility in order to adjust.
However, Reese is ready to step up to take over the loss of last year’s seniors.
Reese knows how hard it can be challenging both school and basketball and being able to adjust to the Bison’s lineup.
”The goal for this season is to improve,” he said. “I want to become a better leader, teammate and captain for my team. I also want to get better at each game and enjoy every bit of it.”
