The girls basketball team starts their season this Friday with a home game at 6:30 p.m. against the Garrett Morgan falcons.
This bison team brings a mix of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers. They are focused on building upon strengths, learning from past challenges and striving for a playoff run.
Returning to the court this season are several standout players who were instrumental last year.
Senior captain Lexi Jaffe, who plays guard, is known for her leadership and scoring ability. She is expected to be a central figure in this year’s offense. Her court vision, sharp shooting and aggressive drives to the basket make her a constant threat.
Jaffe is eager to put her heart into her senior season.
“I’m looking forward to playing games again and bonding with the team,” she said. “Senior year is exciting because I don’t feel as much stress playing the game. I am excited to be playing one last year, meaning I will be leaving everything on the court each game.”
The team is composed of five seniors, no juniors, a handful of sophomores and a larger group of freshmen. For the first time in a few years, the girls basketball is also fielding a JV team.
Jaffe feels that the first scrimmage against Lakeside was a good learning experience for the team.
“That was our first time playing together, so we were all new to it since we haven’t played with some of the people before,” she said. “We just know what we need to work on now.”
Another key player this year will be senior guard Londyn Travis.
Travis has a very optimistic look on the season.
“The team is looking strong with lots of new players,” Travis said.
Travis feels that the JV team is a good sign for the future of the team, as it will help younger players build skills and develop a solid foundation.
She also emphasized the importance of building team chemistry this year, as trusting one’s teammates helps a lot with transitions in the game. She is also excited to focus on building her skills and those of her teammates.
With a balanced roster and a hunger to improve, the BHS girls basketball team is well-positioned to have a strong season. If the team can consistently execute its game plan, support each other on both ends of the floor and stay injury-free, they have the potential to make a deep playoff run this year.
