Greenwood & Nzekwe Place at State Wrestling Tournament
Seniors Josh Greenwood and Uzonna Nzekwe competed at the state wrestling tournament at Schottenstein Center in Columbus on March 12.
Greenwood placed 2nd in the 150 lb. weight class and Nzekwe placed 3rd in the 215 lb. weight class.
Although Nzekwe had hoped to win the state title, he said he learned from the experience.
“It’s all right…It was really eye-opening for me because I don’t lose a lot, so it definitely taught me a lot,” he said.
He also explained the rigors of preparing for the state tournament.
“The hardest part was before the matches, going in, you get a little nervous, but we trained really hard, so I knew that I could succeed,” he said. “Then during the matches it was pretty smooth because of the training.”
Training for wrestling can be intense.
We wake up at 6:00 a.m. to do stairs, then after stairs we lift weights and then actual drills after school,” he said.
Nzekwe is proud of his high school career.
“I don’t really have any regrets, because I put in a lot of work,” he said. “I think I had a pretty good season; I did what I could.”
Nzekwe wants to thank those who have supported him and the other wrestlers.
“We have a very good coaching staff, Mr. Peters helps a lot, shoutout to Mr. Ferns and all the Beachwood people coming out to watch us and support us at states.”
