Boys Basketball Falls to Orange After Tough Battle
The ball was in the hands of Jayson Woodrich. The crowd was silent. With minutes remaining in the game, Woodrich released a three. Swoosh. Tie game.
This was one of the many intense moments in the Beachwood vs. Orange game on Friday, Feb. 3. While the Bison fought hard, the visiting rivals eventually sealed a 58-53 victory.
Sophomore guard Jayson Woodrich thought endurance was an issue for the team.
“I felt we didn’t work hard enough as a team and we lost our confidence,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do to become better for the playoffs.”
Orange opened up the game with a 5-0 run, yet Beachwood bounced back with help from junior guard Josh Sizemore and sophomore guard Woodrich, who both made needed threes. Nevertheless, Beachwood ended the first quarter down 17-10.
The second quarter proved to be no different, with Beachwood gaining even more fouls. Orange had some of their best moments of the game here with a lot of layups. By the end of the first half, the Lions led 29-21.
Beachwood came ready to fight harder in the second half with some noticeable rebounds and layups. Nevertheless, Beachwood still trailed 37-39 at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter proved to be quite a struggle. Beachwood started off well when Jayson Woodrich shot a wide open three. However, the Bison stands jeered after a questionable foul call led to a turnover and an Orange layup, widening Beachwood’s deficit again.
Beachwood still remained strong throughout the fourth but a Beachwood foul followed by two successful free throws sealed the Orange victory with a score of 58-53.
The Bison leads the conference with a 13-5 record on the season. They play at Garfield Heights tonight at 7:30.
