The Cleveland Browns selected 12 players in last week’s NFL draft including nose tackle Danny Shelton out of University of Washington and Duke Johnson, the running back out of the University of Miami.

There were many positives and negatives from this year’s draft, and my overall grade for the Browns draft is a B-.

I feel this way for many reasons including the fact that the Browns didn’t meet their biggest need until the fourth round with the selection of receiver Vince Mayle out of Washington State.

Not only did the Browns wait too long to pick a receiver… They also picked a receiver who is only being projected to be the 4th or 5th receiver, (by NFL.com), on an already extremely shaky Browns receiving squad.

Mayle dropped 13 passes in 2014 and does not have sound fundamentals while using his hands.

The positive side of this pick is that he has good size, standing at 6’2 and weighing 224 pounds. He is also relatively quick in his cuts but does not have breakaway speed. Mayle can also take hits and not go down right away.

Overall, Mayle got a 5.44 draft grade out of 10 from NFL.com, which means he is projected to become an NFL backup and also has the possibility of being a special teams player, so hopefully he will prove to be better than what scouts are anticipating.

There are still many positives to the draft, like our first pick Danny Shelton and Duke Johnson. The Browns also made a risky pick of Cam Erving out of Florida State that could pay off in years to come.

Last season the Browns were ranked 32nd–last place in the league–in the rush defense category. This was also a huge need that the Browns addressed.

Shelton is a 6’2 339 pound dominant nose tackle out of University of Washington who led the country in fumble recoveries and also added 16 tackles for a loss in 2014. Shelton is athletic on the line and dominated the run game at Washington.

Duke Johnson is a 5’9, 207 pound running back out of The U. He is a quick player with very good feet. Johnson runs as if he is not scared of anything, and according to an NFC running back coach, Johnson is the, “Best outside zone back in this draft, and it’s not close.”

According to analyst Mel Kiper, Duke Johnson is the, “best pass-catching running back in the draft.”

For the Browns second pick, they selected Cam Erving, a 6’5, 313 pound center. In my opinion, this was a great pick especially with the possibility of two players who have huge effects on the team leaving… Center Alex Mack and Offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz.

Cam Erving is a strong blocker with good hands; he is also said to be very coachable. In the off-season before his 2014 play at Florida State he also added 33 pounds, preparing himself for the college and NFL seasons ahead.

The Browns also added two tight ends in the sixth round, Malcolm Johnson out of Mississippi State and Randall Telfer out of USC (University of Southern California). They will be used to replace Jordan Cameron.

Overall, the Browns made many other picks that will hopefully help them out in the future like Nate Orchard, the outside linebacker from Nebraska, Ibraheim Campbell, the safety from Northwestern, cornerbacks Charles Gaines from Louisville and Ifo Ekpre-Olomu from Oregon, Xavier Cooper, defensive linemen from Washington State, and finally Hayes Pullard, a linebacker out of USC.
