Lady Bison Kick off Volleyball Season With a Win

Both JV and varsity volleyball teams won their first match at Cleveland Central Catholic last week.

The JV team, coached by Kiara Watkins, fell behind on their first game but pulled ahead during the second and finished strong in their final match with scores of 17-25, 25-17 and 25-14, sailing their way to a win.

“They started pretty slow the first set,” Watkins said. “It could have been due to first game jitters, but they pulled it together played well the second and third set and got the win. Overall, I was pleased with their performance. They played well, but I think we can turn it up another notch.”

“We definitely have to improve on our energy, communication and transitioning within offense and defense,“ she added.

The varsity team also won their match against Cleveland Central Catholic on Wednesday. Like their peers on JV, they lost their first game but managed to pull off a victory.

“We talked to them and told them they had to get it together,” varsity coach Sarah Schoenhagen told Beachwoodbison.org. “Energy-wise [they improved], and their attitudes changed. I’m not sure if they were nervous with it being their first game, but they made a lot less errors.”

Both teams scored back-to-back victories following their first win against Hawken and Shaker on Tuesday, Sept. 2 and Wednesday, Sept. 3 respectively.

Schoenhagen and Watkins feel like the girls played very well and hope for the same momentum to carry into their games in the future. They both think the team has the potential to do great things this year.

The Lady Bison face Cuyahoga Heights tonight and Western Reserve Academy tomorrow. Both games are at 5:00 at home.
