About 50 BHS students turned out on Sunday, April 26 for a Kick it For Cancer kickball tournament.

According to kick-it.org, this organization was established in Chagrin Falls when a 10-year-old boy was battling cancer for the second time.  He held a kickball tournament to raise money for research, and 500 people came to his event. Thus, Kick it For Cancer was born.

Student Council organized Beachwood’s first tournament this year. All of the proceeds will go to Cancer research.

“[Kick-it For Cancer] came to us, and it sounded like a good idea,” Student Activities Director Craig Alexander said.

Of the six teams who competed, three of them were sports teams who named themselves Futbal clique (Girls soccer), BFC (Boys Soccer) and Lady Bison Softball. Some teams embraced the competitive aspect of the event.

According to information provided by Alexander, the event raised $939. The Class of 2016 team came in as the highest fundraiser with $521. Junior Lily Newman raised $446 of that by herself.

“My family has been affected by a bunch of different illnesses including cancer,” Newman wrote in an email. “I always love to help with causes that find cures or help for people, especially children.”

Alexander said next year’s Student Council President will decide whether or not the tournament becomes a tradition.
