On Election Day, Beachcomber reporters look back at the Oct. 15 mayoral debate to examine the candidates’ positions.

Issue Gorden Linick
Philosophy on how city is run The city is run very effectively, and residents are part of  this operation also. I have been in this seat for many years. Communication  between myself and residents has been superior. The services that we provide for our residents are second to none within any municipality. The reality is the city isn’t a business. We provide a service to the residents and we should do that at the lowest cost to taxpayers. We should not be spending money on attending fancy events or on fancy vehicles. This is not what cities were meant to do.
Issue of Mayor’s Salary I don’t control [the salary of the mayor] at all. The stated salary is set prior to the term and the mayor has no input in the matter.   The current mayoral salary is too high. It should be in line with other communities… We are exhibiting way too much excess.
Issue of Safety Director Position [The position] is nothing that is new… The mayor in Beachwood has always been the safety director for years. It didn’t start with my tenure or term of office, but it’s always been that way… This practice is more cost-efficient than having a separate individual as safety director… [This practice] has never been questioned. The mayor should receive one salary. That is clear to anyone who looks.
