Boys Varsity Soccer. Three words. One team. So far, they are off to a season they hope will be one of the best yet. Players Matt Levine, Kaveh Varghai, Phil Keselman and David Stern sat down with The Beachcomber while they cheered on the girls varsity soccer team as they played against Conneaut. The boys excitedly answered questions about their team.
With their team off to a good start, minus their rivalry game against Orange, Kaveh described the team as having good “chemistry. It is so good this year with mostly the seniors and juniors. We have been working together since freshman year.” Senior captain Phil Keselman agreed. These boys know the rules of the field and most have been together since their freshman year. They have all had to face challenges, both individually and as a team. Kaveh explained that the biggest challenge the team faces this year is team work. “We might have turned some of those losses into wins by working together. The game shouldn’t depend on a lucky goal or timing.” But working together isn’t the only challenge the team faces.
As one of the Captains, Phil feels that the team must set an example for the under classmen. “I don’t need to set an example for the upper classmen because they know what is expected of themselves and that they need to work together. The underclass is where it needs to be set. They need to learn the expectations the same way I did freshman year. ”Despite the pressures and challenges these boys face, they have high hopes for the team this year. Kaveh wants to “win the CVC for sure.” David and Matt both agreed that making it farther this year than in previous years would be an accomplishment and a huge goal. Phil laughed to himself after saying his goal was“to get more benches for fans.” The other boys laughed at his comment and nodded their heads in agreement.
Team goals are important but these boys have individual goals as well. David, who plays mostly on defense, stated that some of his individual goals were to make sure “not to let anyone score, help out the team as much as possible and make sure that Blake, the goalies, job easier.”Matt Levine, a junior who was injured last season, wants to have a major comeback this year. “I had five goals last year with six assists, I’m trying to break my record. And get my number back from Phil.” Phil stared at Matt and started laughing. “ Matt will never get my jersey. I’m not worried.”
