As birdsong and dewy grass reappear in Beachwood’s cold, spring mornings, and students once again are able to don their T-shirts, shorts and Crocs, the ballpark opens for the season and Beachwood Bison baseball is back.
Senior captain and starting pitcher Josh Rosenblitt smashed the record for career strikeouts in the first game of his senior season, surpassing Brad Goldberg’s record of 246, which has held since he graduated in 2008.
After the home opener against Keystone on April 1 (4-2 loss) and the first away game against Elyria Catholic on April 4 (10-5 loss), Rosenblitt has reached 262 career strikeouts.
After setting Beachwood’s strikeout record in 2008, Goldberg went on to play at Coastal Carolina and Ohio State, and after a few years in the minors, he transitioned to play for the Chicago White Sox in 2017. Today, he’s a pitching development coach for the Cleveland Guardians.
Rosenblitt is committed to play Division 1 baseball at Oakland University, and has had an exceptionally bright career as a pitcher.
“Our coaches put a lot of confidence in me early on by showing that they trust me and they believe that I can do it,” he said. “I think that’s really helped push my career.”
“I realized during my junior year that I was going to be able to break the record, so it wasn’t much of a surprise, but it felt good to finally break it,” he said.
“I definitely see myself doing something with baseball after college, ideally playing but also coaching,” Rosenblitt said. “College baseball is definitely gonna be harder, just because every hitter is a division one hitter, and there’s a lot of runs scored, so my job is going to be a lot harder. I just have to get bigger, stronger and neutralize that.”
“Our team’s talented this year, for sure,” Rosenblitt said. “During my freshman and sophomore year, we had some pretty good seasons,” Rosenblitt said. “Last year wasn’t great, so hopefully we can bring back the energy we had in those previous years and make a run at the CVC.”
The Bison are scheduled for a home game against Orange today at 4:30.
