Tuesday night was senior night for the Beachwood Bison basketball team as they took on #5 ranked Lake Catholic at home. In a game that many expected the highly touted Cougars to run away with, the scrappy Bison had them scrambling for their lives in the second half before making a comeback to sneak out a two point overtime win 70-68.
Beachwood stayed right with Lake Catholic throughout the first half, trailing at halftime 29-26. The Bison came out on fire in the third quarter, knocking down four three-pointers in the third quarter to open up a twelve-point lead before struggling down the stretch and letting the Cougars back into the game.
Leading 64-63 with seven seconds left in the game, Beachwood became the victim of a questionable foul as a blocking foul that was called on senior captain Ellis Cohen (23 points) after a very minor collision at the top of the key. Now, with only 1.3 seconds remaining and the fans screaming over the call, the Lake Catholic player made one of two free throws to send the game to overtime.
Down by two with time running out in OT, Junior Jordan Richardson (11 points) was able to split a double team and float up a leaning layup from the right side at the buzzer, but as it rolled off the rim the game, as well as the career of the Seniors, came to an end in a 70-68 loss to a very good Lake Catholic team who was expected to walk all over the Bison.
Beachwood earned a two seed and a first round bye in their sectional, advancing them to the Sectional final, where they will take on either Horizon Science Academy or Kirtland. The Bison finish the regular season at 12-8 (10-4). These playoffs will be the last games for seniors Ellis Cohen, Alex Hohl, Jared Moss and Anthony Valentine so be sure to find out when they will be playing and go out and give the team and the seniors your support.q
