In spite of the win, Sept. 30 might be a night the Beachwood football team wants to forget. The Bison defeated the Black Knights 43-6 in Newbury under some of the worst conditions in which it is possible to play a football game. With hard, driving rain and constantly blowing wind, not to mention a field that was so muddy it looked as though it were under construction, it was hard to keep warm let alone move the football.
The Bison were able to manage it, however, as running back Ari Sobel rushed for touchdowns of 22, 42 and 44 yards. Sobel also caught quarterback Alex Hohl’s lone pass of the game for a 20-yard touchdown. Full back Howard Sobel rushed for a 57-yard touchdown and running back Corey Jones rushed for a 5-yard touchdown.
All of the scoring came before halftime as the referees shortened the second half to eight minute quarters in an effort to keep all the players healthy.
The win improves Beachwood’s record to 5-1(2-0) and the loss drops Newbury to 1-5. The Bison have a home game this week against Berkshire, a rare Thursday afternoon game starting at 4:00.
