The BHS young Democrats club was formed in the spring of 2011 and participates in many events such as the Cleveland Gay Rights parade, the Fourth of July parade and the Labor Day parade. Members have also participated in voter registration by calling voters and canvassing, which is going door to door.
Beyond helping to reelect president Barack Obama and Senator Sherrod Brown, the club hopes to raise political interest among the student body.
“Our goals would be to further inform Beachwood students about politics and the advantages of the Democratic party,” added Club President Scott Arkin.
On Thursday, Oct. 4, nine club members met to discuss the importance of being involved in the election, volunteer opportunities and to share personal thoughts on the Democratic party. A representative from the Obama for America campaign spoke, as well as School Board member Steve Rosen.
“I am encouraged by the interest that I have seen by students regarding this election” said Arkin. “I really hope that students can overcome their traditional apathy when it comes to politics and understand and care about these issues that are going to affect our lives in the future.”
