One of the signs that the end of the school year is approaching is the annual PTO garage sale. On the weekend of May 6th, the north gym was overflowing with a staggering amount of toys, clothes, kitchen appliances and a slot machine.

Brenda Shapiro, the head volunteer, explained that hundreds of hours went into planning for this sale.  She was very proud to say that there were far more donations this year than last year, as well as better outpouring from the community. The garage sale committee was smaller this year, but still pulled off a great event.

Shapiro explained that the money from the sales go back to school programming for the students. In the past, garage sale proceeds have paid for the recycling center for the middle school.

Jan Kirschenbaum, who started the garage sale at BHS 12 years ago, revealed that her inspiration for starting the garage sale was the desire to bring the community together and to make money for the schools.  She also noted that the first two years of profit went into paying for the digital marquis in the front of the school, the pavers in the front and the furniture in the atrium. This year’s sale earned $12,216, which will be distributed by the PTO for educational purposes.

Due to construction, the sale won’t be back next year, but it could continue in the future, depending on the number of volunteers who are willing to sacrifice their free time to help create this great event.
